It is still not fully understood what exactly causes veisalgia, the scientific name for a hangover. What is understood though, and has been experienced by many of us is the horrible feeling it can cause. Wickham’s Cure is designed to lessen that after-effect. How does it work? Well, let's look at what happens when alcohol, more specifically ethanol (EtOH) is metabolized in the body. Alcohol is mainly metabolized in the liver. Alcohol dehydrogenase, an enzyme produced in the liver is responsible for this breakdown of alcohol to its byproduct acetaldehyde. Aceltyaldehye actually has toxic effects on our cells.   During the metabolism of EtOH besides the production of the metabolite acetaldehyde, the process also depletes our cells on NAD+ and other essential vitamins, resulting in our cells not being able to perform their normal cellular function. These factors are what are believed to contribute to the not-so-great feeling the next day. Some studies suggest that the faster EtOH is metabolized in the body, the less of a hangover.  

Wickham's Cure is a tonic that provides the body with the essential elements believed to speed up alcohol metabolism. Additionally, Wickham’s Cure also replenishes the body with the essential building blocks that were depleted during EtOH metabolism, needed for normal cellular function.    

Our tonic has a threefold approach to how it is thought to help to reduce the after-effects.  

1. Wickham’s Cure has zinc which is an essential component needed for the production of alcohol dehydrogenase. Zinc is not naturally produced in the body and needs to come from either the foods we eat or supplements. Our thought is that with a higher bioavailability of zinc via Wickham’s Cure, more alcohol dehydrogenase can be protected, resulting in the faster metabolism of the EtOH, and less of a hangover.
2. NAD is an extremely important molecule, some arguable say the most important molecule, and plays a key role in many cellular processes.   Our bodies do not make enough NAD+.   We obtain the building blocks from dietary sources, and then synthesize what is needed. Wickham’s Cure has an NAD+ booster. Studies have demonstrated that oral supplementation of NAD+ boosters can in fact increase NAD+ in cells. Due to the depletion of NAD+ during EtoH metabolism, Wickham’s Cure will replenish some NAD+ allowing cells to theoretically, restore their normal cellular function, again minimizing the negative after-effects of consuming EtOH.
